440 c ImagePERU, 1896-99, 2c Scarlet, 20c Orange (144, 150). Tied by clearly struck British barred "C43" handstamp with "Correos de Peru, Payta" double-circle backstamp on 1901 cover with preprinted address to New York, arrival backstamp, Very Fine, an astute observer will notice the peculiar use of the British post office "C43" cancel despite there having been no British post office left in Paita by this time, the only reasonable assumption we can provide is that this was a "left over" cancellation that was used as it was applied 24 years after the last known use of the British marking in 1877 (Image)
