1618 c Image3c Rose, Ty. I, Imperforate Horizontally (25b var). Rich color, wide margins, with no trace of perforations at top and bottom "indicating this might have been an imperforate between" (to quote accompanying Ashbrook note), used with 10c Green, Ty. III (33) and horizontal pair of 1c Blue, Ty. V (24), Positions 14-15L8, tied by red grid cancels, matching "New York Paid 3 Nov. 28" (1857) credit datestamp on small cover to Paris, France, red Havre arrival datestamp, receiving backstamp, minor edgewear, left 1c small internal tear, 3c stamp lifted and put back into place, otherwise Very Fine and attractive, with explanatory note from Ashbrook which has note from Thomas Alexander on back opining that this is imperforate horizontally (several examples of singles are known), with 1995 P.F. certificate declining opinion, offered on its own merits (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1858 5-CENT INDIAN RED.

Our search of old auction catalogues and the records of The Philatelic Foundation and P.S.E. yielded only eleven unused examples of Scott 28A. Of these, the majority are without gum.
