881 c Image24c Green & Violet (120). Horizontal pair and single, rich colors, fine impressions, tied by blue cork cancels and by partly struck matching Richmond Ind. circular datestamp on refolded legal size package wrapper to Circuit Court of Fayette County in Lexington Ky., addressed in blue with notations indicating that contents included a deposition, right stamp in pair has small tear and slight crease, one backflap added, some wear and tears as is to be expected on such a heavy use

ONE OF THE THREE LARGEST RECORDED FRANKINGS WITH THE 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL. ONLY ONE OTHER COVER WITH THREE 24-CENT STAMPS (A STRIP) IS IN PRIVATE HANDS. THE QUINTUPLE FRANKING IS CONTAINED IN THE SWISS POSTAL MUSEUM'S COLLECTION AND IS UNAVAILABLE TO COLLECTORS.

In total there are seven recorded 1869 Pictorial covers with multiple copies of the 24c. Only three of those contain more than two stamps and one of those is permanently ensconced in the Swiss PTT Museum.

Vertical pair, used with 3c Green (147), tied by partly legible strikes of Oct. 14 circular datestamps on reduced cover to Alpena Mich., extensive note at bottom from sender indicates this held depositions, Oct. 14, 1871 receipt docketing, scotch tape repairs could no doubt be aided by a restorer, the tape causes some staining on stamps, cover with cloth bindings held in place by intact wax seals

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE DOMESTIC USE OF A PAIR OF THE 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE.

The franking pays 17-times the 3c rate, so the depositions must have been fairly long. Only four covers are known bearing two copies of the 24c 1869 Pictorial (plus three with more than two stamps, one offered in lot 881) (Image)
