1378 c Image24c Red Lilac (70). Vertical pair, used with 2c Black (73) and 10c Green (68), tied by 6-Point Star in Circle New York Foreign Mail cancels, red "N. York Am. Pkt. VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL THREE-COLOR FRANKING TO TURKEY SENT BY FRENCH MAIL. FROM THE WASHBURN CORRESPONDENCE.

This cover was carried on either Inman's City of Baltimore (depart NY Aug. 27; arrive Queenstown Sep. 6, Liverpool Sep. 7) or NGL's Hansa (depart NY Aug. 27; arrive Southampton Sep. 7). The mail was off-loaded and entered the French mail system at Calais. It was prepaid for the double 30c French Mail rate, but the 21c credit indicates it was treated as a single rate letter at the New York exchange office.

Ex "Cihangir" (Schaeffer). With 2001 P.F. certificate. Illustrated in an Apr. 10, 2000 article in Linn's Stamp News (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 12-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE TO TURKEY. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED.

The 1869 Pictorial Research Associates census lists no examples of the 12c used to Turkey. This was sent via North German Union Direct Mails, at the 15c rate. Even 15c 1869 Pictorials to Turkey paying this rate are rare, with six recorded in the PRA census.
