Essays for Re-Use Prevention: Bi-Colored Essays continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
301 E ImageNational Bank Note Co., 1c Carmine & Blue, Untrimmed Die Essay on Thin White Paper (79-E35a var). 42 x 59mm with uncleared surrounds and die cutouts at sides, usual small paper imperfections as seen on similar issues

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS ESSAY FOR THE ONE-CENT DENOMINATION IS NOT LISTED IN SCOTT OR BRAZER, AND MAY WELL BE UNIQUE. A GREAT 1861-68 ISSUE ESSAY RARITY.

The 5c essays listed as 79-E35a use elements of 1861 Issue designs. They were created in 1868 for experiments in bicolor printing, which would be employed for the 15c-90c 1869 Pictorial Issue. We believe they are among the most beautiful of all essays and proofs. The 1c denomination in lieu of the 5c offered here is extraordinary and believed to be unique.

Ex "Lake Shore". Scott prices the 5c essay trimmed to stamp size at $2,000.00 (Image)
