The Richard Drews Collection of U.S. 1861-1868 Issues continued...

1861 Contract Essays: 5-Cent
Lot Sym. Lot Description
20 E ImageNational Bank Note Co., 5c Black, First Design, Progressive Large Die Essay on India (67-E8). On 35 x 50mm card with die no. 442 at bottom, intense shade, this state of Die 442 shows outer frameline interrupted at corners where scrollwork would eventually be added

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THE EARLY STATE DIE ESSAY FOR THE 5-CENT 1861 FIRST DESIGN.

In common with the 5c First Design (Scott 57), this essay lacks the lines in Jefferson's hair as compared to the issued stamps (Scott 67, 75-76 and 95), giving the appearance of a "high part". This state of the die also lacks the ornaments in the corners as seen on Scott 57 and its related proofs. The thin border surrounding the design is present but is blank at the corners. This is the only recorded example of this state of the die for the 5c 1861 Issue. Scott Retail is woefully out of date, as this is priced at less than the 5c First Design trial color proof (Scott 67-E9, or 57TC), despite the relative abundance of those (we have sold at least four) (Image)

23 TC Image5c Dark Orange, Large Die Trial Color Proof on India (67TC1af var). Die sunk on 120 x 156mm card with full die sinkage, brilliant color which is darker than that of the cut down Dark Orange proof offered in lot 24, die no. 442 and albino imprint at bottom of India paper, some minor scattered toned spots almost entirely confined to card

VERY FINE. A RARE LARGE DIE TRIAL COLOR PROOF OF THE 5-CENT 1861 ISSUE.

Only one true Buff large die proof is known (67P1). While this does not match the Buff color, it is deeper than the Scott-listed Dark Orange. Mr. Drews regards it as a transitional color between Buff and Red Brown (Image)
