Lot Sym. Lot Description
223 E Image2c Black, Francis Patent Essay (73-E var). Horizontal pair with half of another pair below, on imperforate bluish green horizontally laid treated paper, manuscript "X" cancels, Fine-Very Fine, a striking Black Jack essay, the Francis Patent essays, produced in Providence R.I., were few in number compared to other paper and ink essays of the period, they used chemically treated paper which would react with special inks to deface the stamp and prevent reuse, this particular Black Jack essay is the first we have encountered since a pair in our 2005 "Lake Shore" sale, ex Metzger (Image)
