Lot Sym. Lot Description
9 E ImageNational Bank Note Co., (3c) Black, Vignette Die Essay on White Glazed (65-E11b). 46 x 52mm with imprint at bottom, intense shade, thin spot at top not affecting design (nearly all the essays on white glazed paper we have encountered, across all issues, have a thin spot), Very Fine appearing example of this die essay, the only other example we have offered in Black was from our 2005 sale of the "Lake Shore" collection, these nearly always seem to come in Scarlet (Image)

11 E ImageNational Bank Note Co., 3c Scarlet, Progressive Die Essay on India (65-E13). India paper affixed to 61 x 36mm card, with pencil arrows pointing out traces of scrollwork around perimeter -- this die state likely followed the finished First Design, which at this stage lacks the completed ornamentation around the perimeter (appears to have been removed from die) but has some of the ornaments inside the numerals and "US" that appear in later states -- Very Fine (Image)

12 E ImageNational Bank Note Co., 3c Deep Red Brown, First Design, Die Essay on India (65-E15c; formerly 56TC1). 42 x 52mm with die no. 441 and imprint at bottom -- this state of the die was used to produce Plate 2, from which First Design proofs and stamps were printed, the die shows ornamentation around perimeter and more elaborate ornamentation inside numerals and "US" than appears on the next state of the die or 3c Second Design stamps -- exceptional depth of color which we are calling Deep Red Brown (none of the listed colors describe this), incomplete light pencil notation at bottom, Very Fine (Image)

14 E ImageNational Bank Note Co., 3c Rose, Progressive Die Essay on India (65-E16, unlisted). Showing the complete design as on the issued stamp except lacking the outer balls around the four corners (possibly other minor design differences as well), large margins to full at bottom, small "f" handstamp on back, Very Fine, this is the discovery example of this progressive die proof that represents an incomplete version of the 3c Second Design -- unlisted in Scott, though it would logically fall immediately after the finished First Design, and therefore we are calling it 65-E16 (Image)

17 TC Image3c Black, Large Die Trial Color Proof on Thick Glazed Card (65TC1af). 55 x 73mm with albino die no. 441 and imprint at bottom, exceptional impression pops off this type of shiny card

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED 1861 3-CENT BLACK LARGE DIE TRIAL COLOR PROOF ON GLAZED CARD.

There are a variety of trial colors for the 3c 1861 issued design listed in Scott. All but this single example are printed on India paper. Despite that fact, Scott prices this the same as the India paper proofs.

19 P Image3c Scarlet, Large Die Trial Color Proof on India (74TC1a). Die sunk on 66 x 64mm card with full die sinkage, die no. 441 and albino imprint at bottom, beautiful bright color in this distinct shade

VERY FINE. ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 3-CENT SCARLET TRIAL COLOR IN LARGE DIE PROOF FORM.

We feel this is of greater importance than the other trial colors for the 3c design, as this color was also used to print the elusive Scott 74. This is one of only three recorded examples and the first we have encountered (Image)
