2413° c ImageNew Orleans La., 5c Red Brown on Bluish (62X4). Large margins to full, tied by "New Orleans La. Oct. 9, 1861" river mail circular datestamp, also tied by "New Orleans La. Oct. 10" circular datestamp applied at the regular post office, on buff cover to Natchez Miss., manuscript "Paid" at upper right, stamp lifted and hinged in place, under the stamp is an area outlining where a half dime was glued in place, the coin was removed and the stamp was applied in New Orleans

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE NEW ORLEANS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL CANCELLED AT THE WHARFSIDE OFFICE WHERE THE STAMP WAS AFFIXED AND ALSO AT THE MAIN NEW ORLEANS POST OFFICE THE FOLLOWING DAY.

This is one of two reported such uses of the New Orleans provisional (other is ex Antrim). Ex Knapp, Emerson, Silver, Simon and Myerson. With 2014 P.F. certificate (Image)
