Crompton, Colon" handstamp, second strike in black on back, Colon transit circular datestamp, vertical file fold affects 3c stamp, otherwise Fine, after a delay in New York due to the early sailing of the Atlas line's Ailsa, this was carried on the PMSS Colon which arrived in Colon Sep. 28, the monthly Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. steamer left the previous day, rather than wait a month this was handed to a forwarder in Colon who arranged for faster carriage to the British charge d'affaires in Bogota, an unusual routing (Image)

2281 c Image10c Brown (161). Well-centered, tied by "N. York Steamship Nov. 25" (1875) circular datestamp on cover from Callao, Peru to New York City street address, clear strike of "PANAMA/14 NO 1875/TRANSIT" three-line datestamp and large "12" British debit handstamp, "Due 9" depreciated currency handstamp (12c plus 2c for depreciated currency and 5c blanket ship rate minus 10c prepaid equals 9c due, see below for explanation), blue circle backstamp of Callao stationer, bit of ink erosion at top left in "Estados Unidos" directive, Very Fine, with 1997 P.F. certificate, this cover was sent from Peru to the United States by British Mail via Panama, then by American Packet, the composite postage was 10c to Peru (internal), 6p to Great Britain (from Callao to Panama) and 5c to the U.S. (reduced blanket ship rate, effective July 1, 1875), in the absence of stamps, the 6p British postage was debited with the equivalent "12" cents due marking, however, since the U.S. had to settle accounts with Great Britain in specie, but collected postage due in currency, a 2c premium was charged for currency depreciation, the 14c due was added to the 5c ship rate, for a total of 19c due, against which the 10c stamp was credited, leaving a balance of 9c due (Image)
