2118 c Image1c Blue, Ty. IV (9). Positions 25-26R1L, used slightly overlapping with 3c Dull Red, Ty. III (26), tied by light strikes of circular datestamp on 1859 cover to Lieutenant S. Law on the U.S.S. Hartford in Hong Kong, China, red "New York Br. Pkt. Jul. 12" circular datestamp, endorsed "Per Cunard Steamer" and "Via Marseilles", manuscript due marking, "Forwarded by Thos. Hunt & Co., Hong Kong" handstamp at left, London and receiving backstamps, 3c faint corner crease at top right

VERY FINE. A SCARCE FRANKING PAYING THE SHORE-TO-SHIP RATE ON A COVER TO HONG KONG, WHICH WAS DELIVERED TO THE RECIPIENT BY A FORWARDER.

The receipt docketing at left indicates this found the recipient on Nov. 9, 1859. It arrived in Hong Kong in September (day of backstamp is unclear). According to Wikipedia, the Hartford was launched Nov. 22, 1858 and sailed for the far east where she relieved the Mississippi as flagship of the East India squadron. In November 1859 (when this was received) the U.S. Minister to China, John Elliott Ward, came aboard in Hong Kong and the ship sailed for Canton, Manila and other ports to advance American interests in the region. 2120 c Image1c Blue, Ty. IV (9). Two singles, used with 3c Dull Red, Ty. II (11A), affixed overlapping and tied together by grid cancels, "Northampton Ms. Apr. 6" (1857) circular datestamp on blue folded tissue paper cover to Paris, France, "GB/1F60c" framed Anglo-French accountancy handstamp, French entry double-circle datestamp and "8" decimes due handstamp, minor edgewear, Fine and unusual, this was sent just after the start of the U.S.-French Treaty and therefore after the end of the "Three Months" period, mail could still be sent to France via this British Open Mail method, but it was more costly than the 15c total for a treaty-rate cover, and so was seldom used (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT CHICAGO PERFORATION USED ON AN ILLUSTRATED CAMEO CORNER CARD COVER. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST COVERS WITH THIS ISSUE WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED.

Wilson Hulme speculates in his article in Chronicle 175 that R. K. Swift distributed Chicago perf stamps to various businesses as a trial or to strengthen the possibility of selling the perforating machine to the post office. Many of the businesses were in a straight path between Swift's bank and Elijah Hadley's (inventor of the machine) office (p. 167).

Signed Dr. Chase. With 1977 P.F. certificate. (Image)
