1714 c Image"Our Flag." A. Dapremont, New Orleans La. Two covers, first with bold and clear strike of Jackson Miss. May 29 circular datestamp with "5." in circle handstamp on cover to Winnfield La. with "Our Flag. The Flag Adopted by the Southern Congress!" corner card, advertising the stickers which were "Designed for Envelopes, Letter Paper, Business Cards, Bill Heads & C.", bottom of advertisement states packages (of 25 stickers) will be sent anywhere in the Southern Confederacy for 30c, the top left of the cover shows a round circle (evidence that a sticker was once affixed), missing backflap and small part of bottom flap, sealed tear, second cover bears the "Our Flag SC" 7-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic sticker in red, blue and gold (ST-1), tied by "Waynesboro Ga. Sep. 11" circular datestamp with "PAID" straightline (no rate indicated) and addressed to Vice President Alexander Stephens in Richmond, usual subject summary on back and missing flap, light soiling

VERY FINE. A WONDERFUL COMBINATION OF COVERS, WITH THE DAPREMONT ADVERTISEMENT ON ONE AND A TIED EXAMPLE OF THE "OUR FLAG" STICKER ON THE OTHER. TIED EXAMPLES ARE EXTREMELY RARE.

Alexander Dapremont of New Orleans produced his "Our Flag SC" labels initially as imperforate sheets and later as die-cut singles. The "SC" stands for "Southern Congress", as described in the advertisement. Most examples of the label are not cancelled or tied and are therefore difficult to authenticate. They are generally scarce and this tied example is very rare. Dapremont also produced at least one Flag Patriotic design (F8-9, imprint 20) which is very rare and not all examples include the Dapremont imprint (see lot 1572 for an example of F8-9 with the imprint). 1715 c ImageFredericksburg Va. 5 Jul. 22 (1861). Partly clear strike of circular datestamp with 5c integral-rate, manuscript "Paid 5cts" on cover to Mechums River Va. with 25-Star Confederate Saltire Battle Flag Patriotic sticker (ST-6), original letter enclosure datelined "Aquia Creek, Battery No. 1, Sunday July 21, 1861", wonderful war content in two separate letters written on same sheet of paper, discussions of fighting at (First) Manassas, General Beauregard and the statement "I have pasted a picture of our new battle flag on the envelope", cover with edge and bottom right corner faults, die-cut sticker with crease at top left

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS CONFEDERATE BATTLE FLAG PATRIOTIC STICKER IS EXTREMELY RARE. THE CONTEMPORARY CONFIRMATION OF ITS USE ON THIS COVER IS EXTRAORDINARY.

Collectors of classic philatelic material appreciate how rare it is to find a cover with content that specifically mentions an aspect of the cover that would become of philatelic interest to later generations. This is a rare example of such content and is especially desirable since the label itself is so rare.
