Clear strike of blue double-line oval handstamp on 3c Red on Buff Nesbitt entire (U10) to Demopolis Ala., pencil docketing dated Feb. 9, 1861 and indicating Mobile origin is partly erased but readable, entire slightly reduced at top and missing most of flap, Very Fine appearance, a rare name-of-boat marking in the early Confederate period, we have not offered another example in our auctions since the Kilbournes acquired this cover in 1994 (Sale 758, lot 905), after plying the waters of the Alabama and Tombigee Rivers, the Alice Vivian was captured by the Federal blockader De Soto in August 1863 in the Gulf of Mexico, with 580 bales of cotton, her cargo was taken to New York and the ship to New Orleans as a prize (New York Times Aug. 22, 1863) (Image)

1317 c ImageSteamer Genl. Quitman. Clear strike of red oval handstamp with manuscript "1861, 24 April" date on 3c Red on Buff Nesbitt entire (U10) addressed to Carroll, Hoy & Co. in New Orleans, usual small filing holes for this correspondence, Very Fine and rarely struck this clearly (most are faint), we have encountered the General Quitman Confederate packet boat handstamp on several covers bearing New Orleans Postmaster's Provisionals, but we have seen only a small handful of examples showing Confederate use of a U.S. postal entire, according to the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, the General Quitman is believed to have been built at New Albany, Indiana, in 1859 for a New Orleans ship owner, it was "one of the best and most powerful boats on the river" in 1862 and one of the last to escape from the city on April 24, evacuating upriver "a good many ladies, some officers, and some ordnance stores", ex John Hall Sr. (acquired by the Kilbournes in a 1969 H.R. Feb. 27, 1861" double-circle datestamp on blue folded letter to New Orleans, letter with heading "Below Cuchatta (Coushatta) Chute E. Whiteheads Landing", Very Fine appearing and rare Confederate use of U.S. postage on cover with the B.L. Hodge name-of-boat oval, this was carried into New Orleans and posted as a drop letter, the B. V (24) tied by New Orleans double-circle datestamps on buff cover to Carroll & Hoy & Co. in New Orleans, the date in the markings is unclear but the "1" of "1861" is apparent in the strike at right, left stamp with small internal fault, usual small filing holes, still Very Fine, the C.S.A.
