1479 c ImageBeaufort S.C. May 17, 1861. Clear strike of circular datestamp with "Paid 3" in circle handstamp on cover to Alexandria Va. with red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag with "Southern Rights" Banner Patriotic design (F7-9), "Parrott, Alexandria" imprint, stains in corners could easily be removed by a paper restorer, otherwise Very Fine, rare "Southern Rights" design and especially rare with the U.S. 3c rate handstamp--although the concept of States' Rights is referred to in verses on Patriotic covers, this is the only flag design which incorporates the words "Southern Rights", other examples we have encountered were published by T. S. Whitaker of Wilmington N.C (including on the letter offered in lot 1484), this Parrott, Alexandria imprint, also found on the cover offered in lot 1564, is undoubtedly rare and is unlisted in the C.S.A. Catalog for this design--illustrated in Wishnietsky's Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages on p. 33 (Image)

III (26), small piece out at left, double perfs at top, on cover to Athens Ga. with red and blue 9-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (F9-2B), small stain at top and backflap tears just extend to couple short tears at bottom, otherwise Fine, a rare 9-Star Flag cover with Confederate use of U.S. postage, the ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina, due to the short time period there were fewer 9-Star Confederate Patriotic designs produced than any other flag designs (7 thru 13 stars). VERY FINE CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF U.S. POSTAGE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS 8-STAR FLAG PATRIOTIC DESIGN.

The 8-Star flags began with the admission of Virginia to the Confederacy and ended with the admission of Arkansas -- a period of only one month. This design is the only example recorded.

1482 c Image"Indian Valley Va. May 22". Manuscript postmark with small "3" cancelling 3c Dull Red, Ty. III (26) with natural s.e. at right, on cover to Nathans Creek N.C. with red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag and "C.S.A." in Old English Patriotic design (F7-20), fresh and exceptional condition

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS VERSION OF THE BASIC CONFEDERATE 7-STAR FLAG DESIGN WITH "C.S.A." IS CONSIDERABLY RARER THAN OTHER VARIETIES. A WONDERFUL CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF U.S. POSTAGE.

The few examples of this rare "C.S.A." flag design we were able to locate were used from Virginia post offices. The last two we offered, from the Dr. Brandon and Kilbourne collections, respectively, were from Goodson Va. (and were both post-June 1, 1861 Confederate mail system uses). Virginia was admitted to the Confederacy on May 7 and conducted the popular referendum on May 23, the day after this cover was postmarked (Image)

May 25, 1861" with red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag with "Southern Rights" Banner Patriotic design (F7-9), "Whitaker, Wilmington" imprint, lengthy military content, cover slightly reduced at right

VERY FINE. A WONDERFUL COMBINATION OF TWO DIFFERENT 7-STAR CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC DESIGNS, INCLUDING THE RARE "SOUTHERN RIGHTS" BANNER DESIGN ON LETTERSHEET.

Although the concept of States' Rights is referred to in verses on Patriotic covers, this is the only flag design which incorporates the words "Southern Rights." It was published by T. S. Whitaker of Wilmington N.C., who also published Confederate songs, including "The Stonewall Quickstep" by John H. Hewitt.

Ex Antrim. Accompanied by another letter dated in 1863 -- we are not sure if there is any connection, but it was present when the Kilbournes bought the cover from Earl Antrim. The C.S.A. Catalog does not list the F7-9 design on a lettersheet (Image)

Brown) in Milledgeville Ga. with red and blue 8-Star Confederate Flag with Liberty Cap Patriotic design (F8-6), original letter enclosure from Julius's cousin datelined "Thunderbolt May 28 1861", good military content, light soiling, Very Fine appearance, a desirable and rare Patriotic design with Confederate State use of U.S. postage, sent three days before the start of the Confederate postal system (and the prohibition on the use of U.S. stamps), this is the same design as F7-12A with the eighth star added to the center, a note on back indicates that the writer was killed at the Battle of Atlanta, illustrated in Wishnietsky's Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages on p. 44 (Image)

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL SMALL 9-STAR PATRIOTIC COVER COMBINING SEVERAL DESIRABLE ELEMENTS.

The ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina. Due to the short time period there were fewer 9-Star Confederate Patriotic designs produced than any other flag designs (7 thru 13 stars). They are very rare. This cover combines several rare or interesting elements, including the 9-Star design, a scarce manuscript town postmark, the missent and forwarded notation and the Confederate State use of U.S. postage (Image)
