1469 c Image"College Hill Miss. Apr. 24, 1861." Manuscript postmark with year cancelling 3c Dull Red, Ty. III (26) on small cover to Lexington Va. with red and blue 8-Star Confederate Flag with Liberty Cap Patriotic design (F8-10), original letter enclosure datelined at College Hill on Apr. 22

VERY FINE. AN OUSTANDING CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF U.S. POSTAGE ON A PATRIOTIC COVER. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST 8-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG DESIGNS, WITH ONLY TWO OR THREE KNOWN.

This 8-Star design is the same as F7-5C but with a 6-point star added to the center of the circle of 5-point stars. The middle star, with its rounded points, resembles an asterisk symbol far more than it does a star. This cover and the example offered in lot 1477 are the only ones we have encountered.

The F7-2B design contains a prominent flagstaff, in contrast to F7-2A which lacks the flagstaff. On this cover the panels for the stars and the top stripe are well out of alignment, attesting to the sometimes crude nature of production for Confederate Patriotics (Image)

1474 c ImageSouth Carolina Palmetto Tree Patriotic (FSC-5). Woodcut design printed in bronze, the tree resembling the unique 10c Provisional entire (16XU6), on 3c Red on White Star Die entire (U26), unaddressed and unused, manuscript "South Carolina Envelope Stamped with palm tree just before Fort Sumpter was bombarded", slight edgewear and soiling, otherwise Fine, extremely rare design -- an article in the Stamp Specialist by George N. Malpass (Chartreuse Book, 1948, p. 58) discusses unusual Confederate Patriotic designs and illustrates a cover very similar to the example offered here, with the same handwriting and slightly different wording (and the same misspelling of Fort Sumter); these are the only examples of this design known to us -- illustrated in Wishnietsky's Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages on p. 96, ex Kohn, purchased by the Kilbournes privately from Raymond H. III (26) on cover to Vice President Alexander Stephens in Montgomery Ala. with red "Southern Confederacy by Hanleiter & Adair, Atlanta Ga." illustrated advertising design for a newspaper (C.S.A. Catalog unlisted), detailed design depicts scenes of agriculture, transportation and industry, also with printed rates of $5.00 daily and $2.00 weekly, missing backflap as usual for this correspondence, the subject matter of the letter (no longer present) is written on the front, two small nicks at top could be restored, Fine appearance, the few examples we have encountered are addressed to Stephens (it is also known in blue), the Atlanta Southern Confederacy newspaper was started in February 1859 by fire-eater Dr. James P. Hambleton, he sold the paper to Hanleiter and Adair who merged it with their Gate City Guardian, it ceased publication in 1864. (Image)

VERY FINE. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST 8-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC DESIGNS, WITH ONLY TWO OR THREE KNOWN.

This 8-Star design is the same as F7-5C but with a 6-point star added to the center of the circle of 5-point stars.
