Steamboat Mail–Independent and C.S.A. Use of U.S. Stamps
Lot Sym. Lot Description
511 c ImageSteamer Cherokee. Bold strike of blue name-of-boat circular handstamp with illustrated cotton plant (Milgram No. 212), clear strike of "Mobile Ala. Feb. 26, 1861" double-circle datestamp on 3c Red on White Nesbitt entire (U9) to Raymond Miss., "STEAMBO(AT)" straightline handstamp struck partly over top, manuscript "Via New Orleans" at bottom, some mended edge faults at top which do not affect the handstamp or indicia, missing part of backflap

VERY FINE STRIKE OF THIS RARE MARKING. ONE OF ONLY THREE WE HAVE OFFERED AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE ON A COVER WHICH IS AN UNEQUIVOCAL CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF U.S. POSTAGE.

This rare "Steamer Cherokee" name-of-boat marking, with a cotton motif, is only the third example we have offered since keeping computerized records (one was on a piece of a cover front). It is also the only example on a cover which is an unequivocal Confederate State use of U.S. postage, which makes it far more desirable.

Ex Bilden. With 1975 C.S.A. certificate (Image)

New Orleans, manuscript "per str Grand Duke" at bottom and "freight" at top, Very Fine and rare Confederate State use of U.S. postage on a Mississippi River steamboat cover, the Grand Duke was outfitted as a cotton-clad gunboat for C.S.A. naval service in February 1863, ex Antrim and Weatherly (Image)

513 c ImageSteamer Genl. Quitman. Beautifully clear strike of red oval handstamp with manuscript "1861, 24 April" date on 3c Red on Buff Star Die entire (U27) addressed to Carroll, Hoy & Co. in New Orleans, usual small filing holes for this correspondence, Very Fine and rarely struck this clearly (most are faint), we have encountered the General Quitman Confederate packet boat handstamp on several covers bearing New Orleans Postmaster's Provisionals, but this is by far the better of only two examples we have encountered showing Confederate use of a U.S. postal entire, according to the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, the General Quitman is believed to have been built at New Albany, Indiana, in 1859 for a New Orleans ship owner, it was "one of the best and most powerful boats on the river" in 1862 and one of the last to escape from the city on April 24, evacuating upriver "a good many ladies, some officers, and some ordnance stores.", ex John Hall Sr. (acquired by the Kilbournes in a 1969 H.R. Harmer sale) (Image)
