The Kilbourne Collection of CSA Stamps and Postal History continued...

THIS IS THE LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THE RARE 2-CENT GREEN LITHOGRAPH. IT IS THE FINER OF TWO KNOWN BLOCKS OF 24.

Noted Confederate Lithograph specialist Leonard Hartmann records the block of 24 from the Hall collection (Siegel Sale 840, lot 180) as the largest known multiple. It is also Extremely Fine appearing, with small faults. This block from the Kilbourne collection has been off the market for more than 50 years. This is the finer of the two blocks of 24.

VERY FINE. A MAGNIFICENT AND EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 2-CENT GREEN LITHOGRAPH ON AN ILLUSTRATED ADVERTISING COVER.

A review of the Warren Census of the 2c Lithograph on cover (2011 Congress Book), our Levi records and Power Search found only two other 2c Lithographs on covers with an illustrated design; one a Masonic design on the back of a cover (ex Dr. Brandon, Siegel Sale 1087, lot 400) and one with an overall design for stoves (ex Antrim, Brooks, Solomon and Hill).

VERY FINE. AN EXCEPTIONAL AND RARE USE OF THE 2-CENT GREEN JACKSON ISSUE ON AN OBSOLETE UNITED STATES ENTIRE, PAYING THE DROP RATE.

It is not unusual to find the more common Confederate General Issue stamps or semi-official imprints used on obsolete U.S. entires, since paper shortage was such an acute problem in the Confederacy. However, the use of the scarce 2c Jackson Lithograph on such an entire is remarkable. We could not locate another using Power Search.

EXTREMELY FINE. AN UNUSUALLY CHOICE MULTIPLE AND ONE OF THE FINEST OF ALL OF THE 2-CENT GREEN LITHOGRAPH STRIPS ON COVER. VERTICAL STRIPS ARE ALSO MUCH RARER THAN HORIZONTAL MULTIPLES. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY SIX RECORDED 2-CENT GREEN JACKSON ISSUE COVERS FROM TENNESSEE.

This was used only eight days after the uniform 10c rate went into effect for all distances. Covers from Tennessee with the 2c Green Lithograph are rare, with only six listed in the census compiled by Dr. Daniel C. Warren in the 2011 Congress Book. This is the finest of the six. Vertical strips of five are also much rarer than horizontal strips. We record only one other cover with a vertical strip, used from Macon Ga. (Siegel Sale 787, lot 3610).

Oct. 21, 1862" double-circle datestamp on oatmeal cover to Hillsboro N.C., slightly reduced at left and stain in top left corner of cover where clipped, two stamps with minor margin stains

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COVER WITH A STRIP OF THE 2-CENT GREEN LITHOGRAPH CROSSING TWO TRANSFERS ON THE PRINTING STONE AND SHOWING A LARGE INTERPANE MARGIN.

The Confederate Lithograph Issues (Scott 1-5) were produced from printing stones of 200 subjects, arranged in side-by-side panes of 100, with a vertical gutter between. Each of the left and right panes of 100 consisted of two transfers of the 50-subject transfer stone. Multiples crossing the vertical gutter that separated the left and right transfer units are rare, as the sheet of 200 was typically separated into panes of 100 before individual stamps or blocks were cut out. A review of the census compiled by Dr. Daniel C. Warren in the 2011 Congress Book, as well as our own sale archives, found only one other cover bearing a strip of five with interpane margin (ex Dr. Brandon, Siegel Sale 1087, lot 310).

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A UNIQUE COMBINATION FRANKING WITH THE 2-CENT GREEN LITHOGRAPH AND A STRIP OF FIVE OF THE 10-CENT LIGHT BLUE PATERSON PRINTING.

The notation "26 oz" and 52c postage indicate that the sender believed the rate for a newspaper was 2c per ounce. Until July 1, 1863, the rate for non-subscriber newspapers was 2c for the first three ounces plus 2c per additional ounce. Therefore, the correct postage was 48c, and the 52c franking was 4c overpaid.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE BISECT OF THE 2-CENT GREEN JACKSON LITHOGRAPH. AN OUTSTANDING CONFEDERATE POSTAL HISTORY RARITY.

The bisect on this cover made up 1c of the 5c under-500 miles rate effective until June 30, 1862. This is the only recorded bisect of the 2c Green Lithograph or of any 2c Confederate issue.
