642 c Image20c Green (13). Horizontal pair, full to large margins except just touching at top of right stamp, tied by well-struck "Georgetown S.C. Nov. 3" circular datestamp on cover to "Col. Ben Austin, PA CS -- Genl. E.K. Smith, Shreveport La., via Meridian Miss.", stamps additionally tied by Meridian Miss. dateless circular handstamp, manuscript "ppd. 40 cents" at bottom left, cover skillfully restored to remove staining

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EAST-TO-WEST TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVER, BEARING A PAIR OF THE 20-CENT GENERAL ISSUE TIED BY THE MERIDIAN TERMINUS OFFICE DATESTAMP.

No more than twenty covers with a pair of the 20c Green paying the 40c Trans-Mississippi Express rate are known.

Wood Recd. 28th July/64", also pencil notation at left from noted collector Harold Brooks stating this was found in a trunk and an undoubtedly genuine use, cover with some slight staining including on right stamp, minor edgewear

May 28, 1862" double-circle datestamp (month inverted) on folded letter covertly carried from Union-occupied New Orleans to Mobile and placed into mails for Pittsylvania C.H. Va., datelined "Bank of Louisiana, New Orleans 26 May 1862", receipt docketing on inside, 5c Lithograph toned and creased from vertical file fold, 5c De La Rue has barely noticeable insect nibbling

A FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF MAIL SMUGGLED OUT OF NEW ORLEANS JUST ONE MONTH AFTER UNION FORCES CAPTURED THE CITY. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE MIXED-ISSUE FRANKING.

Examples of mail carried clandestinely to and from New Orleans after the occupation by Union forces in April 1862 are extremely rare. This cover pre-dates the formation of the Louisiana Relief Committee one year later.
