Positions 8-10R1E, horizontal strip of three, left and center stamps Type Ib, right stamp Type II, large margin at top, just touched to just in on other sides, beautiful Plate 1 Early shade, tied by small red "PAID" grids, matching "Boston 3 17 Jul." integral-rate circular datestamp on cover to Salem Mass., with original 1851-dated enclosure, center stamp with piece out and tear prior to use

AN EXTREMELY RARE PLATE ONE EARLY STRIP OF THREE WITH TYPE Ib AND TYPE II ON A COVER WITH THE BOSTON SMALL "PAID" IN GRID CANCEL APPLIED IN RED.

The Boston "Paid" grid was struck in red or magenta only briefly in July 1851. It is extremely rare on a cover with 1c stamps -- perhaps three or four are known.
