1079 ogbl ImageHAWAII, 1863, 1c Black, Grayish (15). Plates 4-A/4-B, Types I-X (Westerberg Positions 1-10), hybrid complete pane of ten with left column Plate 4-A and right column Plate 4-B, original gum, huge margins all around, a few creases and small hole at top

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE HYBRID PANE OF TEN OF THE 1863 ONE-CENT BLACK NUMERAL ON GRAYISH, WITH COLUMNS FROM PLATES 4-A AND 4-B.

This hybrid pane nicely demonstrates some of the typographical changes between Plates 4-A and 4-B. Westerberg briefly discusses this in his book on page 51. He surmises that the typographical changes between Plates 4-A and 4-B did not all occur at the same time and consequently a third plate is possible showing types from both plates. He called this Plate 4-AB. This example, which he references from the Tows collection, proves his theory, as it shows the normal full Plate 4 layout with Type I in the left column and Type II in the right column. If it had been cut from a sheet with impressions of adjacent complete Plates 4-A and 4-B, taking one column from each, it would show Type I in the right column and Type II in the left column.

Of the seven Scott 15 panes recorded in the Westerberg census (1970), only two are hybrids.

Ex Tows and Honolulu Advertiser. With 1996 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail as two blocks of four and a pair, without premium for the format (Image)

1080 ng ImageHAWAII, 1863, 1c Black, Grayish (15 var). Plate 4-A, Type IV (Westerberg Position 4), "1" without broken serif unlike most other examples from this position, unused (no gum), ample even margins, small purple backstamp shows thru faintly at bottom, Very Fine, Westerberg notes that the serif must have broken off at an early stage of printing, he recorded only one other single and one contained in a block of eight, there are probably no more than ten unbroken in existence, with 1995 H.P.S. certificate, Scott Retail with no premium for the position (Image)

1083   ImageHAWAII, 1863, 1c Black, Grayish (15). Plate 4-B, Type VI (Westerberg Position 6), large margins, cancelled by mostly complete "(San) Francisco Cal. Ju(l?) 30, 1865" double-circle datestamp, expertly rebacked over thin spots

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE USE OF THE SAN FRANCISCO DATESTAMP TO CANCEL THE 1863 ONE-CENT NUMERAL ON GRAYISH PAPER.

The 1c Numeral was intended for and typically used on local or inter-island mail. The presence of the San Francisco datestamp on this example indicates it was used to make up part of the Hawaiian 5c rate.
