(Nov.) circular datestamp cancel, corner crease at top right, Fine appearance and rare, only about ten off-cover examples are recorded and this new find is the first identified with a non-Waterbury cancel (Somersville Ct. is about one hour north of Waterbury), in an article on this issue in the Sesquicentennial book (pp. 144-148), Wilson Hulme dates the device, based on shade and plate, to 1854, all are from Plate 1 Late, the roulette is spread far apart, leaving wide areas of the stamp still connected, with 2017 P.F. certificate calling the town "Somerset" but we believe they meant Somersville (Image)

510°   Image10c Green, Ty. I (13). Large margins including bottom sheet margin, bright color, unobtrusive town cancel and blue cancel at bottom

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT TYPE I.

The 10c Type I stamps are defined as having complete scrolls at bottom. They are only found on the bottom row of the plate (20 positions). For some reason, they were usually trimmed at bottom when they were separated, leaving a dearth of quality copies. This example, with its large bottom margin, is an extreme exception to the rule.

With 2013 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90 Jumbo; SMQ $1,850.00). We have no idea why this stamp did not receive the well-deserved grade of 95 (or 95J). (Image)
