4060 og ImageAUSTRALIA, 1913, 5sh Yellow & Gray, First Watermark, CA Monogram Single (12 var; SG 13 var; BW 42za). H.r., bright color, natural gum crease in the selvage just barely extends into the stamp

FINE. AN IMPORTANT RARITY OF AUSTRALIA. THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND UNUSED CA MONOGRAM SINGLE OF THE 5-SHILLING FIRST WATERMARK TO BE DISCOVERED.

The only other unused monogram single was in the Arthur Gray collection. It has identical centering to the example offered here. It also has a gum crease that is much more pronounced. Besides these two unused singles, there are three other CA monogram examples. They are used (c.t.o.) - a block of four, strip of three and single (the strip of three is in the Royal Collection).

This example was discovered by one of our describers in an estate where the stamps were housed in glassines and arranged in a rather haphazard manner. The previous collector evidently did not know he had a special item, as the glassine was simply marked "SG 13, £375".

A newly discovered rarity of Australian philately. Brusden White value (Image)
