4265° c ImageHONG KONG, 1858, Jan. 10, Folded Letter from India to Hong Kong. Two singles of India 1855 -1/2a Blue (SG 37; Scott 11), tied by "B/1" concentric octagon cancel with corresponding red "Cal G.P.O., 18 Dec. 1857" double-circle datestamp on reverse of folded letter to Augustine Heard & Co. in Hong Kong, reverse with "Hong-Kong 10 JA 58" single-line arc circular datestamp (Webb Ty. 12), manuscript rated "4", fascinating contents datelined in Calcutta regarding the government opium sales for 1858 in India with a detailed listing of "chests" sold by month in both Behar and Benares

VERY FINE. A SPECTACULARLY RARE AND SUPERB STRIKE OF THE HONG KONG SINGLE-LINE ARC CIRCULAR DATESTAMP - WEBB TY. 12. WEBB RECORDS FOUR EXAMPLES KNOWN THOUGH THE FIGURE IS LIKELY LESS THAN A DOZEN. AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF HONG KONG STAMPLESS POSTAL HISTORY.

The Hong Kong datestamp offered here is one of the finest strikes we have seen of this rare cancel. Other examples we have seen range from comparable to weak and partial strikes. Webb notes this cancel "is shown in the GPO records as having been sent out to Hong Kong on 17 October 1857. For many years it has been thought that this dater, if it reached Hong Kong at all, was not taken into use, for covers of the period are fairly plentiful and it had never been reported." (Image)
