2367 c Image10c Brown (161). Horizontal pair, fresh color, wide margins and superb centering, natural s.e. at right, tied by circle of wedges cancels, mostly complete strike of "Yokohama Japan. Feb. 24" (1874) circular datestamp on gray folded cover to Genoa, Italy, sender's directive "Via America", "San Francisco Cal. Mar. 20" double-circle datestamp, red "New York Paid All Br. Transit Mar. 28" circular datestamp ties pair, Genoa receiving backstamp (Apr. 11)

VERY FINE. A DESIRABLE AND RARE USE OF THE 10-CENT 1873 CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE ISSUE ON A COVER FROM JAPAN TO ITALY VIA THE UNITED STATES POST OFFICE IN YOKOHAMA.

This cover was carried from New York on the Cunarder Marathon on Mar. 28, arriving Queenstown Apr. 7. The 20c postage comprised the 10c rate from Ja[pan to the United States and the 10c Closed Mail rate to Italy.
