2357 c Image5c Chocolate (223). Tied by circular waffle grid cancel, bold strike of San Francisco "SHIP" in circle handstamp on 1893 cover to Ningpo, China, originated on the U.S.S. Petrel in Oonalaska (modern-day Unalaska, in the Aleutian Islands), blue embossed name-of-ship seal with sea bird design (a petrel of course) on flap, handed off to another ship traveling to San Francisco where it was posted with "San Francisco Sep. 9 '93" circular datestamp on back, pencil "Ship Letter" notation, "U.S. Postal Agency Shanghai Rec'd Oct. 7, 3:30 PM '93" circular datestamp on back struck on arrival in China, backflap with tear, Very Fine and an outstanding use, our newspaper research located articles announcing the mid-September 1893 departure of the U.S.S. Petrel from Oonalaska to China, due to "uncertainly over American interests due to the Geary Act", the Geary Act was an anti-Chinese immigrant law passed in May 1892 which added onerous permit requirements for Chinese residents of the U.S., accompanied by an article discussing the Petrel's imminent departure for China and commenting that "parties and secret organizations on the Pacific coast are sending Chinese back to their native land. The present bad feeling is being augmented" (Image)
