More than 250 advertising covers and cards arranged in four 3-ring binders, better designs mounted on exhibit pages and a few loose, fantastic range of topics including druggist and medical, brewery, banks, Adams Express, tannery, insurance, grocers and commission merchants, manufacturers of many different products, hotels, paints, elevator works, books, printers, bibles and virtually anything else you can think of that would have been advertised during the time period, a strong subset of the collection depicts Philadelphia buildings including forerunner of the Franklin Institute, City Hall, range of issues starting with 1851, strong representation of Bank Note issues, some other better such as 2c and 3c 1869 Pictorial, some faults to be expected but overall selected for superior eye appeal

2121 c Image(War of 1812) President's Message to Congress-Delivered Nov. 5th, 1811. 2pp folded printed transcript of speech delivered by James Madison discussing deteriorating relations with Great Britain, essentially changing status from friendly to hostile, last blank page with manuscript dateline of New York on Nov. 6, 1811 (day after speech was delivered), addressed to Newport R.I., letter written by one slaver (William Vernon) to another (Samuel Vernon), light strike of red New York circular datestamp, manuscript "N Bedford Novr. 15 forwarded", indistinct manuscript rate, interesting contents including "Herewith is annexed the presidents message to Congress which has created so much interest in this country, it is I think very warlike in its contents", some minor splitting and wear, Very Fine, very unusual used so soon after the speech was delivered, this was likely printed in advance of the speech and distributed to the states (Image)

2122 c ImageFort Jesup La. Jul. 28, 1845, Annexation of Texas. Circular datestamp with manuscript "10" rate and "Pub Service" on folded letter from Paymaster Lloyd J. Beall to Paymaster General U.S. Army at Washington D.C., transcript accompanies and includes fascinating commentary on troops recently departed Fort Jesup and headed for Texas, including statements on the command of Colonel Twiggs, who was later a General in both the U.S. and Confederate States armies, file folds, still Very Fine, desirable Texas military content during the period leading up to annexation (Dec. 1845), accompanied by soldier background information (Image)

2123 c Collection of Mexican War Postal History and Letters. Nine long letters (23 pages in total) including seven from William Ross Allen Jr., and one each from John Ballard and Alexander Birmingham, all were members of Company C of Anson County Volunteers, seven are dated and postmarked with varying types of "BRAZOS" two-line straightline handstamps, one hand-carried, one with light strike of New Orleans circular datestamp, from March 1847 thru March 1848, first talks about the first major battle of the war (Battle of Buena Vista), second bears Apr. 23 Brazos marking (13 days after earliest known) with interesting contents about expecting to join Gen. Taylor at Monterrey, third touches on Battle of Cerro Gordo, one with interesting contents discussing execution of two Americans and five Mexicans (the first American "was shot by 24 men and him sitting on his coffin. They did not kill him the first fire-they had to shoot him the second time", others with interesting contents, some soiling and wear but generally in decent condition, Very Fine and useful group, typed summary with historical background accompanies
