Jul. 11" (1862) circular datestamp on cover to Shanghai, China, manuscript "40" credit, red New York and London transit datestamps, Shanghai and Hong Kong backstamps, two 10c stamps with parts of design trimmed at left, part of top backflap removed causing small tear at top right, Fine, an attractive and unusual three-color franking for the 45c rate by British Mail, carried on the Cunarder Scotia from New York on Jul. 16, arriving Queenstown Jul. 25, with 2003 P.F. certificate (Image)

York Br. Pkt. Paid Nov. 18" circular datestamp on back, manuscript "48" cents credit (in error, should be 40c), London transit ties 1c and 3c stamps, crayon "1" British Colonial credit, Jan. 1864 receiving backstamp, some edgewear and nicks, still Fine and very scarce, an attractive 1861 Issue five-color franking paying the 45c rate for British Mail via Southampton, carried on the Cunarder China from New York on Nov. 18, arriving Southampton Nov. 29, then by the P&O steamer Ripon to Alexandria, the Nemesis from Suez to Galle and the Ottawa from Galle to Hong Kong (Image)

Transit Sep. 21" (1868) circular datestamp on back of folded letter to Yokohama, Japan, from the Thorel & Co. correspondence, red "32" credit handstamp, red London Paid transit, red crayon "1" British Colonial credit, Hong Kong datestamp (Jan. 17) and Yokohama receiving datestamp (Jan. 28) on back, 12c stamp with some minor wrinkling

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL FRANKING PAYING THE 42-CENT RATE TO JAPAN BY BRITISH MAIL VIA MARSEILLES.

This was a duplicate of an original which was sent overland via San Francisco. A very similar Thorel & Co. cover with the same franking realized $8,500 hammer in our 2010 sale of the Vogel collection (Image)
