United States Stamps continued...

1917-20 Issues including A.E.F. Panes (Scott 481-499f)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1068   Image2c Deep Rose, Ty. Ia, Imperforate (482A). Schermack perfs clearly visible at left, neat wavy-lines machine cancel, characteristic rich color, faint corner crease at top left

FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY 40 RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS MAJOR 20TH CENTURY RARITY.

Scott 482A, like its slightly more famous predecessor, Scott 314A, was issued imperforate by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and sold to the Schermack Company for use in its patented stamp-affixing machines. The Schermack "Sealer and Stamper" machine typically applied stamps one at a time, and, in most cases, the hyphen-hole perfs on one side would be cut off. Unlike Scott 314A, the release of imperforate sheets printed from the experimental Type Ia plates escaped the notice of contemporary collectors, and, therefore, has a very small survival rate.

Our census of Scott 482A, available at our website at http://siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/482A/482A.pdf , records three covers, one unused single, a used pair and 40 used singles for a total of 46 stamps. Most examples are either cut well into the design or have the Schermack perfs trimmed away on one side.

Census No. 482A-CAN-25. With 1977 and 2017 P.F. certificates (Image)

1073 ogbl Image2c Rose, Ty. I, A.E.F. Booklet Pane (499f). Lightly hinged, brilliant color, two stamps small natural inclusions, one with small ink mark on gum (none of this mentioned on accompanying certificate)

FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT A.E.F. BOOKLET PANE. IT IS BELIEVED THAT NO MORE THAN 20 EXIST IN ANY CONDITION.

The A.E.F. booklet panes were issued in September 1917, primarily for use by the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I. Only 3,000 panes were prepared of both the 1c and 2c denominations. By October they were no longer needed, as Congress voted to allow mail to be sent free of charge by active members of the Armed Forces. Many of the panes were destroyed.

With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (Image)
