1898, (66-2/3c) Ty. D Surcharge on 33-1/3 Violet on Dark Blue, -1/3bbl., Beer (REA54a; Priester 54D). Priester Type 50 surcharge, faintly cancelled, large margins to clear, rich color, few small faults including vertical crease

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1898 TYPE D PROVISIONAL SURCHARGE ON THE ONE-THIRD BARREL. ONLY TWO ARE RECORDED IN THE PRIESTER CENSUS.

The other recorded example, also with Type 50 surcharge, was offered as lot 658 in the November 8, 1989 Christie's auction of the Weill Brothers stock.

1898, ($4.00) Ty. B Surcharge on $2.00 Brown on Dark Blue, 1hhd., No. REA43f, Beer (REA57; Priester 59B). Unused (no gum), with bottom sheet margin and large margins all around, couple negligible flaws, fresh and Extremely Fine for this scarce issue, only 15 are recorded in the Priester census, ex Tolman and "Scarsdale", this is by far the nicer of the two we have offered since keeping computerized records (Image)
