II (11A), tied by partly clear strike of Camden N.J. circular datestamp on cover to Providence R.I., original enclosure from Camden dated Feb. 27, 1855, missing backflap and minor cover nicks, appears Very Fine, one of only about a dozen covers recorded with the Jenkins' Dispatch 89L1 issue, and only a few are to-the-mails uses with U.S. postage (two others listed in Power Search), an overview of the post and different stamp printings is provided in the description of lot 1273 in our Golden sale (Sale 817). Hicks in Chicago, conjunctive service and mixed franking with Pomeroy's Letter Express and American Letter Mail Company stamps, pair of Pomeroy's Letter Express 5c Lake on Thin Bond (117L6), tied by pen cancels, two slightly overlapping singles of American Letter Mail Co., 5c Black (5L1), red "Paid" straightline cancels, the Wells stamp with typical oxidation, other stamps with couple small flaws

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED INDEPENDENT MAIL USES WITH STAMPS OF THREE DIFFERENT COMPANIES.

This partial cover front demonstrates the cooperation among Independent Mail companies that allowed them to provide service across a huge area for significantly lower rates than the U.S. Post Office charged. It also shows how postage was divided among the participating service providers by using each other's stamps. A thorough explanation of how this worked can be found in our description of the incomparable complete eastbound cover with three company stamps, offered in our sale of the Puliafito collection (Siegel Sale 1124, lot 210). That is the only complete cover and is widely acknowledged as the greatest item of the Independent Mail period. It is franked with stamps of the same three companies as the front offered here, but each from a different issue. This item is a new discovery and has never before appeared at auction. (Image)

Large even margins all around, bright color, manuscript cancel, used on folded letter datelined from Rochester N.Y. on Aug. 15, 1844, addressed to Fulton Street in New York City, bold red "Boyd's City Express Post, Aug. 17 9 O'C" framed datestamp, some internal letter splits not affecting front or back of cover, Extremely Fine stamp, a desirable and rare use, this comes from one of the eight (at least) positions on the plate with the value "20 for $1" incomplete ("$1" removed), this state of the plate was used only for printing stamps in Black on Yellow paper, the Independent Mails book reports 21 covers with the Value Incomplete stamp in the Pomeroy census, this comes from a new find and has not been listed before, Scott Retail on cover not tied (Image)
