1869 Issue, George T. Jones Essays
Lot Sym. Lot Description
4011° E Image[No Denomination] Black, George T. Jones Grant Essay on India, Single Color (112-E1a). Exceptionally large 43 x 47mm margins (these and the two-color 112-E1b essays are always cut to stamp size), intense shade

EXTREMELY FINE. A VERY RARE LARGE-SIZE GEORGE T. JONES ESSAY FOR THE 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE CONTRACT COMPETITION.

Scott lists and prices these as "cut to stamp size." In addition, while the single color essay offered here is priced less than the essays with light overprint this must be rarer as this is the only example we have offered since we started keeping computerized records more than 20 years ago (Image)

4012° E Image[No Denomination] George T. Jones Grant Essay on India (112-E1b). Black with light violet safety overprint, full margins to clear, unusual application of safety overprint which leaves portrait clear, tiny corner crease at top left

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE GEORGE T. JONES ESSAY FOR THE 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE, DEPICTING ULYSSES S. GRANT.

We have offered this essay with full safety overprint and with safety overprint at bottom only, but we are aware of only one other (in a less obvious color) with the overprint missing the portrait, which was no doubt deliberate. (Image)
