New York N.Y., 5c Black, "ACM" Initials (9X1). Mostly full to large margins except close at bottom, tied by blue pen strokes on folded letter with large blue "R" handstamp (Recorded Letter), red "New York 5 cts. 23 Feb." (1846) integral-rate circular datestamp and matching "Paid" arc, cover with some edgewear, skillfully cleaned, Very Fine appearance, very scarce, Philadelphia's post office was the first to apply a marking to indicate that a letter was registered, the "R" marking was only applied to incoming letters and the large "R" on this cover was used until October 1849, ex Pope (Image)
