Mitchell King in Charleston S.C., sender's routing "Per Fortress Monroe", manuscript "xd D.W.C." at top with pencil note in a third hand "Postage inside" (probably in the form of a half dime) and "Care of Genl. Huger", Extremely Fine, a scarce civilian flag-of-truce cover exchanged through Confederate controlled Norfolk early in the War, Norfolk fell to Union troops on May 9, 1862 (Image) E. $ 500-750

1846 c ImageLigon's Tobacco Warehouse, Richmond Va. Bold strikes of blue "Norfolk Va. Dec. 20, 1861" double-circle datestamp and "Paid 5c" in circle on North-to-South flag-of-truce cover to Lieut. George W. Kenney, "Prisoner of War Care Genl. Winder, Richmond Va.", manuscript censor's marking at top "Exd. D.W.C.", and "By Flag of Truce", barely reduced at top, fresh and Very Fine, an unusually choice cover, Lt. Kenney was held prisoner at Ligon's Tobacco Warehouse after capture at the Battle of Ball's Bluff (he was exchanged on Feb. 19, 1862 and subsequently killed in action on June 30 at White Oak Swamp), any covers to or from Ligon's are elusive and flag-of-truce covers sent via Confederate controlled Norfolk are particularly scarce, ex Walske, accompanied by background material including photocopy of signed "Casualty Sheet", reporting the death of Lt. Kenney (Image) E. $ 500-750

(66XU1), one U.S. entire signed by Kimbrough as an Independent State use from Jefferson Texas (no year date, reduced), the rest are handstamped Paid uses with a wide range of markings, many better including a U.S. entire used from Confederate Arkansas (as an envelope without postal value) and another used from Mississippi, more than 10 with corner cards, a few embossed including two cameo grocer's designs, Martinsville Va.
