FINE. AN IMPRESSIVE AND EXTREMELY RARE IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER MULTIPLE OF THE 13-CENT 1909 BLUISH PAPER ISSUE. THIS IS THE ONLY PLATE NUMBER EXAMPLE FROM PLATE 4946.

A plate block of six is valued at $60,000.00 in Scott and very few are known. This imprint and plate number strip is a cost-effective alternative, and it is the only such multiple we were able to locate (excluding the plate blocks and full panes). It was reported in the U.S. Stamp Specialist (March 2004) and remains the only plate number example of the 13c Bluish Paper from Plate 4946.

VERY FINE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE WIDE TOP PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF SIX OF THE 1909 13-CENT ON BLUISH PAPER.

Lewis Kaufman records seven plate blocks of the 13c Bluish Paper -- three from the top, three from the left and one from the bottom. In addition to these plate blocks, there is one complete pane of 100 in private hands (4942 UL, ex Weill Stock) and another complete pane (4945 UR) is in the Postmaster General’s Collection” at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, which is the pane reported by Boggs from the Post Office Department files.

This plate block was probably acquired by W. Parsons Todd from one of the original dispersals, circa 1910-14, and was owned by him for more than 60 years, thus explaining its extraordinary freshness.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1909 13-CENT BLUISH PAPER ISSUE. THIS BEAUTIFUL STAMP HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY BOTH THE P.F. AND P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED.

An estimated ten 13c Bluish Paper panes were packaged with normal stamps and distributed to the post office at Saginaw, Michigan. According to the Assistant Postmaster, John J. Spencer, "We found what was left of what no doubt had been originally ten sheets safely resting at the bottom under a lot of new stock, the coming of which had doubtless saved these from annihilation [or use]. They were readily distinguished, having a marginal pen and ink marking. We found a partial mint sheet and margins from several other sheets had been used. One or two sheets had also been precancelled. We were satisfied that ten sheets (of 100) had reached this post office."

FINE-VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED USED PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF ANY OF THE 3-CENT TO 15-CENT 1909 BLUISH PAPER SPECIAL PRINTINGS, SOME OF WHICH WERE INADVERTENTLY PACKAGED AND DISTRIBUTED TO POST OFFICES. AN IMPORTANT RARITY AND ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE PLATE NUMBER SELVAGE.

A Power Search review located four used blocks of the 13c Bluish Paper, all of which have Saginaw cancellations. This is the fifth recorded used block, and it is the only one with an imprint or plate number. A sixth used block was divided into singles after it was certified by The Philatelic Foundation in 1992.
