246 c ImageCharleston S.C. Jun. 4, 1861. Bold strike of circular datestamp on ship letter received at Boston, then sent to Charleston and forwarded to Greenville S.C., neat "Boston Mass. May 28" double-circle datestamp, "SHIP" handstamp and "8" rate handstamp struck out by grid cancel at Charleston where datestamp, "PAID" and "5" handstamps were applied for forwarding postage in Confederate mails, manuscript "Emily Keith" ship-name directive at upper left, trivial edgewear, Very Fine, received at Boston as a ship letter on the brig Emily Keith (arrived May 27 -- she was returning from Buenos Aires when caught in a gale, she stopped at New York City for repairs on Apr. 15), sent from Boston just three days before postal relations between North and South were severed and then forwarded in the new C.S.A. postal system, this extraordinary combination of markings from two different postal systems is undoubtedly unique, ex Antrim, Kohn and Calhoun (Image)
