Position 72L2E, large margins to just in at top left, small scissors-cut in bottom margin prior to use, deep rich color, tied by "Brunswick Me. 3 Paid Mar. 25" circular datestamp on brown cover to U.S. Ship 'Saratoga' via Naval Lyceum and sent to recipient in Hong Kong via Macao, clear strike of "U.S. Naval Lyceum" full-rigged sailing ship handstamp at left, docketed at top "Recd. Hong Kong Jan. 5, 1853 pr. (coal ship) Gertrude, Macao", minor edgewear, top flap expertly reattached

VERY FINE. A RARE USE OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ORANGE BROWN STAMP ON A COVER SENT VIA THE U.S. NAVAL LYCEUM TO THE RECIPIENT IN HONG KONG.

This oval handstamp depicting a full-rigged ship was applied to mail forwarded to naval personnel from the the U.S. Naval Lyceum in Brooklyn at no additional charge. In the case of this letter, it took nine months to reach the recipient. (Image)
