294 c Image1c Buff (112). A few slightly blunted perfs from affixing at edge of cover, used with pair 3c Ultramarine (114), tied by blue "Cincinnati O. Jun. 2" (1870) circular datestamps and pair by target on buff cover to Creusburg, Germany, red "New York Paid All Direct Jun. 4" transit datestamp, framed Bremen transit ties 3c pair, clear Creuzburg arrival backstamps, Very Fine, a rare cover with 1869 Pictorial stamps used to pay the 7c North German Union rate via Bremen -- put into effect in July 1870 (but announced earlier), the 7c NGU rate had the misfortune of coinciding with the Franco-Prussian War when France declared war on July 19; fear of German ships being captured while at sea caused the North German Lloyd and the Hamburg-American lines to keep their ships in neutral ports and to cease operations; normal service was restored in February 1871 but the rate was reduced to 6c in October -- needless to say, covers showing the ill-fated 7c NGU rate are very rare, this is a choice example with two values of the the 1869 Pictorial Issue, ex Klein and Lafayette (Image)
