3110 c ImageHouston Tex., 10c Black entire (40XU3 var). Light strike with "Houston Tex. Oct. 10" circular datestamp on cover to a Col. A. Turner at Oakland Tex., additional "Paid" handstamp below provisional marking, small repaired nick at top left, Very Fine appearance and extremely rare, this is the only recorded example of the 10c Houston Black entire with the additional "Paid" straightline, the only other 10c Black we record (and the only one listed in Crown and in C.S.A. Catalog) is a cover without the "Paid" handstamp and used with a 20c General Issue stamp (not a provisional usage), ex "Camina", with 1994 C.S.A. certificate (Image)

3115   ImageJackson Miss., "5"(cents) on "Paid 3 Cts." entire (2AXU1 var). Bold circular provisional 3c rate handstamp struck over with small "5" handstamp, mostly clear "Jackson Miss. Sep. 28" circular datestamp on buff cover front only to Canton Miss., 1861 docketing, slightly reduced, fresh and Fine, very rare, the 3c entire is listed by Scott in the 3c 1861 Postmasters' Provisional section as No. 2AXU1, but this re-rated entire is unlisted, the C.S.A. Catalog lists this 5c marking over 3c entire as JAC-MS-E01, but that listing example is revalued again to 10c (priced at $5,000.00), ex Kohn and Dr. Agre, accompanied by normal 5c Jackson Miss. 43XU1 entire dated Nov. 22 and addressed to Jefferson Ala., the two go beautifully together on a page (Image)

3117 c ImageJacksonville Ala., 5c Black entire (110XU1). Small "Paid 5 W T A" in circle provisional marking at right with clear "Jacksonville Ala. Feb. 6, 1862" circular datestamp on orange-buff cover to Cedar Bluff Ala., fresh and Very Fine, extremely rare, the Crown survey lists only four examples of the Jacksonville Ala. provisional (one unused, ex Dr. Agre), this date is unlisted in Crown and comes from the Sargeant correspondence, which accounts for all of the used examples, the "W T A" initials are a mystery as they do not correspond with either of the Confederate postmasters in Jacksonville during the Confederacy, with 1991 C.S.A. certificate (Image)
