3068   ImageCharleston S.C., 10c Black, Cut Square (16XU7). Clear strike of Palmetto Tree design handstamp in black with "P.O. Charleston S.C. 10 Cents" on piece, "Hardeeville S.C. Aug. 27, 1863" circular datestamp with "Due 10" in arc handstamp also struck in Hardeeville, Very Fine, the only recorded example of the Charleston Palmetto Tree 10c Provisional handstamp, this may have been mailed by a soldier stationed at Hardeeville, which was on the railroad line to Savannah, the postmaster did not recognize any prepayment and struck the entire with his "Due 10" handstamp, the only other example of this design is found on the unique press-printed entire (Scott 16XU6), most recently offered in our 2016 Rarities of the World sale (Image)

Aug. 20" (1861) circular datestamp on buff cover to Chunnenuggee Ala., "Paid 5" in circle handstamp struck at center, original contents datelined Aug. 15 from Richmond Va., a letter from a husband to his wife regarding his attempt to obtain a commission in the Confederate Army (transcript accompanies), Very Fine and rare, the Crown census lists five examples of the 10c Columbus, while there are a few known outside the census there are probably fewer than ten total, with 1987 P.F. certificate stating the "Paid 5" was struck to uprate the cover for weight, accompanied by analysis from Frank Crown speculating on how the provisional came to be in Richmond, how it got back to Columbus and the reason for the uprated marking (Image)
