1127   ImageBRITISH GUIANA, 1856, 4c Black on Magenta (14; SG 24). Large balanced margins, rich color with a sharp impression, signed "EDW(ight)", light Demerara cancel, faint corner creases at bottom left (not mentioned on accompanying certificate)

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1856 4-CENT BLACK ON MAGENTA. A CLASSIC BRITISH COMMONWEALTH RARITY AND ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH FULL SQUARE MARGINS.

This Provisional issue was printed in Georgetown by Baum and Dallas, who published the Official Gazette. It has been hypothesized that the issue was printed due to a delay in the arrival of stamps from England. Many examples are either cut to shape or have heavy creases which discolor the paper. The example offered here, despite having very light corner creases, is a most desirable example of this world rarity.

From the same issue as the famous 1c Magenta. Ex "South Beach". With 1986 E. Diena certificate. SG £25,000 (Image)
