1831 c ImageKIONGA, 1916, -1/2c on 100r to 5c on 100r Surcharges (1-4). Singles of each, tied by violet "Correios e Telegrafos Mocambique Kionga 24-7-17" hexagon datestamps on registered cover to Basel, Switzerland, also with additional individual used set on small pieces dated Feb. 23, 1917

VERY FINE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE SET OF THE 1916 KIONGA SURCHARGES ON COVER.

In 1894, the Germans established an outpost south of the Rovuma River despite an agreement in 1886 with Portugal that the Rovuma was the dividing point between German East Africa and Mozambique. The Portuguese eventually seized Kionga and this was confirmed by the Treaty of Versailles at the conclusion of WWI. (Image)

FINE. A RARE AND UNUSUALLY LARGE MIXED ISSUE FRANKING.
