Confederate States: Blockade Covers, Group Lots

June 3, 1863 cover to Henry Watson in Heidelberg, Germany, although this would have normally been taken to Wilmington for a blockade-runner to Bermuda, in this case it was routed to Charleston and carried to Nassau where it entered the British Mails with red "Nassau Paid JU 22 63" circular datestamp, explicit route notations on back "per Nassau, London, Calais, Paris, Strasbourg" as often found on this correspondence, prepaid 1sh5p rate to Germany, red crayon "1/4" credit and blue crayon "1" (1p retained by Bahamas P.O.), red London (Jul. 27) transit datestamp and circular "PD", Calais transit datestamp (Jul. 27), German transit backstamps, manuscript Jul. 29 receipt docketing, some edge wear from opening at left and slight age toning mostly confined to back, still Very Fine, an outstanding and rare blockade-run cover to Germany from the Watson correspondence, carried on the Alice from Charleston, Henry Watson Jr. was a lawyer and planter in Greensboro, Alabama, during the Civil War he relocated to Europe, his papers (including the letter carried in this cover) can be found in the Duke University Libraries (http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/rbmscl/watsonhenry/inv/) (Image)

Docketed Savannah Feb. 9, 1864 on cover to Mrs. John Lorenzo Locke in Rome, in care Baring Brothers, forwarder in Bahamas dropped it unpaid into the Bahamian mails on Mar. 2, marked 2sh due, comprising 1sh packet postage plus 1sh penalty (accounting at upper right), barely reduced at right, minor edge wear, otherwise Very Fine, carried on blockade runner to Nassau, then on Cunarder Corsica, departing Nassau Mar. 14, arriving New York Mar. 18, then by Cunarder Australasian, departing New York Mar. 23, arriving Queenstown Apr. 2, Baring Bros. paid 2sh, crossed out their name and re-mailed the cover on Apr. 4 at local post office on Lombard Street, prepaid 1sh10p (double 11p to Italy via France), receipt docketing of Apr. 11, accompanied by two prisoner-of-war covers, one North to South and the other South to North, both were mixed frankings but CSA stamps have been removed (3c No. 65 remains), otherwise Fine (Image)
