Boggs in Georgetown D.C., red "Honolulu*U.S. Postage Paid*Apr. 1" circular datestamp, red "Paid" handstamp applied at San Francisco and pencil "2" for ship's captain fee, with original enclosure datelined "Off Honolulu, Sand. Islds., U.S. Ship Vincennes, March 24th 1856", some fascinating content regarding the squadron: "It's just three years today since our little squadron was put in commission at New York and of all the vessels composing it ours is the only one permitted to start for home. The 'Kennedy' condemned, the 'Hancock' worn out, the 'Cooper' too small to safely venture round the Horn and the poor 'Porpoise' with her gallant officers and crew in the deep bosom of the ocean buried and not a voice heard to reveal the cause.", carried on the Long Island, which departed Honolulu Apr. 5 (must have just missed the sailing of the Frances Palmer on the 1st) and arrived in San Francisco May 5, cover wear including tear at top, stamp with trivial corner crease at bottom left, missing top flap, still Fine and rare, very few covers from Hawaii exist with the 10c postage prepaid by a stamp and the 2c ship fee noted in manuscript, ex Golden (Image)
