519 c Important Collection of Transatlantic Stampless Covers. Substantial collection of approximately 220 covers, traveling in both directions between the U.S. and Europe, dates from as early as 1752, 1785 ("Post Paid" circle to Philadelphia), 1787 from Belgium, early 1800's and lots in the 1830's-60's, range of treaty and non-treaty rates, markings, endorsements and ships, some of the better include letter from War of 1812, pioneer steamers Great Western and others, 1848 Retaliatory Rates (incl. the last trip to New York), many "Three Months" period markings including those used for both British Packets and one for American Packet mail (scarce), "Colonies &c Art 12" and "13" handstamps, "GB/2f" with triangular top, "Br. Service", 75c Express Mail rate to New York before being sent overseas, maiden voyage of Hermann, group of German mail covers on exhibit pages including some to Russia, many others, also including covers to Bombay and Cape of Good Hope and one from Hong Kong to the U.S. via France, many were bought as individual lots in long ago auctions and remain on the old lot cards, some for hammer prices in the hundreds of dollars, many covers with the collector's notes on sailings and rates, some mixed condition material but overall a fascinating group worth review
