VERY FINE. CARRIED ON THE MAIDEN VOYAGE OF THE SIRIUS, WHICH WAS THE FIRST MAIL-CARRYING VOYAGE POWERED ENTIRELY BY STEAM TO CROSS THE ATLANTIC TO AMERICA. A REMARKABLE USE.

According to ASCC, in 1838, the British & American Steam Navigation Co. (BASNC) was chartered with the intent of providing regular passenger service on steam-powered vessels. The Sirius, which had been built for service in the Irish Sea, departed London by way of Cork and arrived in New York on April 23. The Sirius narrowly beat the Great Western to New York to claim the distinction of the first steam-powered vessel to carry mails across the Atlantic. She would only make two trips. The first crossing of the Atlantic under steam alone, however, is credited to the Canadian-built Royal William, which left Quebec on August 5, 1833, and arrived at Gravesend September 11, but which did not carry mails under contract until July 1838.
