VERY FINE AND RARE USE OF THE ONE-CENT AND 2-CENT NAVY DEPARTMENT ISSUES ON AN ILLUSTRATED ORDNANCE BUREAU COVER.

Alan C. Campbell, in his article on Navy Department stamps on cover (Chronicle 193, Feb. 2002), records only four 1c and 2c combination Navy covers, each paying the 3c domestic rate. Very few covers are known with this Ordnance Bureau design.

Four covers, originations including U.S. Naval Asylum Philadelphia, two from Navy Yard Philadelphia, fourth cover is from U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis with an original cadet report card for Mr. A. W. Stahl for the 1879 academic year, showing an impressive top of the class standing in two subjects, second place standing in two others, but with a worrisome 67 demerits for the semester, Very Fine and fascinating group, despite his disciplinary record, A. W. Stahl would have a successful career, including serving as superintending constructor of a number of battle ships and armored cruisers before and after the Spanish-American War (source: Annual Reports of the Navy Department), for an article by him on activities of the Navy Yard during the 1898 war see The New York Times April 23, 1899 (Image)
