1037   Image5c Red Brown, Recut Left Frameline (1 var). Position 1L1, large to huge margins all around, neat red grid cancel, recut left frameline shows dark and clear

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THIS RARE 5-CENT 1847 PLATE VARIETY WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED.

The famed Wagshal collection contained more of the recut frameline and broken frameline varieties than any other collection we have encountered. Wagshal's finest example, offered in our Sale 993, is the only one we have seen that compares favorably to the stamp offered here.

With 2015 P.F. certificate confirming the variety, stating Position 1L and additionally stating "showing a slip of the engraver's tool at upper left." With 2012 P.S.E. certificate not mentioning the variety (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $1,350.00 as normal, unpriced as the recut frameline). This variety is now listed in Scott at a value of 2.8-times the normal stamp. Extrapolating from the SMQ value for the normal stamp, this might be valued at $3,500.00 or more (Image)
