678 c ImageSan Francisco to Le Havre, France. Folded letter datelined San Francisco Jul. 14, 1851, forwarded privately to Panama by S. Martin & Co. with their blue octagonal handstamp and "JBF Arrivet Panama" backstamp so no U.S. postal markings, "Panama SP 22 1851" British P.O. datestamp, carried from Chagres by RMSP steamer Thames to Southampton via St. Thomas, red London transit and "COLONIES/&c ART. 13" Anglo-French accountancy handstamp, Calais arrival datestamp with "15" decimes due (10 decimes to Great Britain), Le Havre receiving backstamp, Very Fine and a very unusual routing, U.S. postal regulations required eastbound mail from California to be carried by U.S. packets via Panama and New York, only letters forwarded outside the U.S. mails could reach RMSP steamers at Chagres, ex Pearce and DeVoss (Image)
