A European Connoisseur's Collection of U.S. Classic Issues continued...

5c 1857-60 Issue (Scott 28b-30A)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2163   Image5c Bright Red Brown (28b). Choice centering and separated with part of adjoining stamp at top, fiery red color but lacking the depth of impression to qualify as Indian Red, lightly cancelled by New Orleans circular datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 1858 BRIGHT RED BROWN SHADE OF THE 5-CENT TYPE I.

The 1858 Bright Red Brown is a much more vibrant color than the 1856 Red Brown or later Red Brown. (Image)

2165   Image5c Indian Red (28A). Almost perfectly centered with perfs clear on three sides and barely touching bottom projections, intense Indian Red shade with fiery orange hue, wonderful impression and lightly cancelled by New Orleans circular datestamp

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A REMARKABLY FRESH AND VIBRANT SHADE OF INDIAN RED, THE MOST DESIRABLE COLOR VARIETY OF THE 5-CENT 1857 ISSUE.

We removed this stamp from a piece addressed to France with a 10c Green, Ty. III (33). The additional stamp (Scott Retail $200.00) and piece accompany this beautiful 5c Indian Red.

With 2015 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail for No. 28A (Image)

2166 c Image5c Brown (29). Vertical strip of three, bottom pair uncancelled, scissors-separated with margins of surrounding stamps intact except at upper left where margin of top stamp slightly clipped, used on April 1860 blue folded cover to Nantes, France, sender's oval handstamp indicating New Orleans origin, the post office there did not cancel the strip, red "Boston Paid 3 Apr. 27" credit datestamp just ties the excess margin, leaving the stamps uncancelled, tied by ultramarine Havre octagonal arrival datestamp (May 12), matching "PD" in frame, another strike in red, French transit and receiving backstamps, the strip has been lifted to check condition, Very Fine cover, but obviously there is $3,750.00 Scott Catalogue value in two unused (no gum) stamps that should not be overlooked, ex Close, with 1972 P.F. certificate incorrectly describing one stamp as uncancelled (the middle stamp is also uncancelled) (Image)
