10c 1851-56 Issue (Scott 13-14)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2111 ng Image10c Green, Ty. I (13). Bottom row of Plate 1, unused (no gum), large margins including bottom sheet margin, dark shade and intense impression

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN OUTSTANDING UNUSED SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 IMPERFORATE 10-CENT TYPE I. RARE IN THIS HIGH-QUALITY UNUSED CONDITION.

10c 1855-57 Type I stamps come from the bottom 20 positions of the plate, and they are the only stamps to show the complete right shell and nearly complete left shell. For some reason the sheet margin at bottom was often trimmed away. This bottom sheet-margin unused copy is comparable to one we sold in our 2007 Rarities sale for $21,000 versus $7,750 Scott value at the time.

With 2015 P.F. certificate (Image)

2112   Image10c Green, Ty. I (13). Position 100L1, enormous margins including right interpane margin with centerline, lightly cancelled by Philadelphia circular datestamp, bright shade and very fresh

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN OUTSTANDING SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT TYPE I FROM THE BOTTOM RIGHT POSITION OF THE LEFT PANE, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.

The 10c Type I is defined as having a complete shell at bottom right and was produced only from the bottom row of the plate (20 positions). Although Type I comes from sheet-margin positions, examples almost always have the extra sheet margin cut away. This stamp could be the only centerline sheet-margin example of Scott 13 graded 95 or better (we cannot tell from the P.S.E. Population Report). A Power Search review failed to locate another centerline sheet-margin stamp of this grade or comparable quality.

With 2015 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $2,600.00). (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A COLORFUL AND SUPERB SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT TYPE I IMPERFORATE.

The 10c Type I stamps have complete or nearly complete shells at bottom. They are only found on the bottom row of the plate (20 positions).

Ex Newbury (accompanied by our original lot sheet showing Weill as agent for the buyer at $325 in 1961). With 2015 P.F. certificate graded XF-Superb 95 (Image)

2114   Image10c Green, Ty. I (13). Bottom row of Plate 1, large margins including bottom sheet margin, bright color, cancelled by clear strike of Stockton Cal. circular datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT TYPE I.

The 10c Type I stamps have complete or nearly complete shells at bottom. They are only found on the bottom row of the plate (20 positions). For some reason, stamps from these positions were usually trimmed at bottom when they were separated, leaving a dearth of sheet-margin copies. This example, with its large bottom margin, is an extreme exception to the rule.

Ex Caspary (lot 459 -- margins trimmed slightly since that 1956 sale) (Image)
